Department of Occupational Safety and Health

Introduction
The goal of our department is to train individuals or students dedicated to protect the safety and health of workers. The expertise of graduates extends beyond traditional work environments such as construction sites and manufacturing plants where severe accidents, high levels of noise and heat, chemical storage and use, and heavy industrial processes take place.

Educational objective and curriculum

The curriculum of our department is designed to prepare graduates for entry-level positions with industry and the educational objectives are as follows.
Occupational Safety and Fire

  1. We anticipate that within 3 years following graduation our graduates will be working in a related field.
  2. Our graduates will demonstrate technical competence in the hazard anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of occupational exposures.
  3. They will solve real-world problems by combining observation, evaluation of the literature, measurement and other data collection and analysis of data
  4. They will be able to communicate effectively regarding potential hazards, risk reduction approaches and required actions within the health and safety team, with varying levels of organizational management and other affected workers.
  5. They will be involved in continuous improvement by enrolling in continuing education courses and experiences and by seeking professional certification and by being active in professional organizations.

Occupational Safety and Fire

Our students take professional courses starting the second school year. A practical experience internship period of four-months is an integral part of the academic program. After taking the professional skills courses provided by the curriculum, they will fulfill the requirement for professional skills certificate tests for both occupational safety and health management.

Faculty
Our faculty members are highly qualified, well trained, experienced and enthusiastic in helping students successfully acquire the essential knowledge, skills, and attitude for career-pursuing in the field of occupational safety and health. The majority of the core faculty members are specialists in one or more areas of environmental and occupational health, indoor air quality and process safety management.
Our faculty hold professional certificates such as certified industrial hygienists (CIH) and certified safety professionals (CSP) and have practical experiences in industries.

Equipment and Facilities
Our department has established several laboratory facilities for students to conduct hands-on experiments and for teachers to do researches. The core laboratory facilities include work physiology lab, workplace monitoring lab, industrial ventilation lab and so forth. These laboratories are equipped with a variety of up-to-date equipments.

Occupational Safety and Fire

Work physiology lab
Work physiology course is associated with industrial engineering that is concerned how the human body copes with physical stress, work strain, and the working environment. The experiments are designed to understand how the body performs under a variety of environmental conditions, the amount of rest it requires, when it is able to work at peak levels and evaluate physical fatigue to eliminate occupational injuries. The equipment includes Ophthalmodynamomter, Jamar Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer, Skinfold calipers, Lafayette Model 01163 Manual Muscle Test System, The Jackson Strength Evaluation System, Torso Lift or Torso Pull Test set, Shoulder Lift Test set, Bench step, Cycle ergometer, Treadmill, Dyna Pulse Oscillometric test set, Grooved Pegboard Test set, Purdue Pegboard Test set.

Workplace monitoring lab
Workplace monitoring course is mainly composted two modules, one is physical agents and the other is chemical agents. The hands-on experiments are designed to provide students with a fully understanding about the measurements of physical factors such as noise, vibration, thermal stress, radiation, lighting and chemical agents including particulate matter and gaseous pollutants in the work environment. The equipment includes sound level meter, noise dose meter, noise spectra-analyzer, digital lux meter, dry bulb thermometer, wet bulb thermometer, globe thermometer, air sampling pumps, air-flow calibrators, and different collection media.
Occupational Safety and Fire

Industrial ventilation lab
Many industrial facilities have processes which produce hazardous dusts, mist, vapors or gases. To prevent occupational exposure to these hazardous substances, industrial ventilation (mainly the local exhaust ventilation system, LEV) is required to capture, convey and treat the contaminants. The equipment includes CO2 gas detection, particle counter, pitot tube, inclined tube manometer, rotating vane anemometer, hot sphere velocity meter, differential pressure meter, mini wind tunnel, chemical fume hood, and ACCUBALANCE® with air capture hoods.

The Future Trends and Development
As time changes, awareness on occupational safety and health becomes increasingly important. With the mandated Occupational Safety and Health Act enforced in 2014, a rapid-growing career for occupational safety and health management professionals is highly expected. Being a major vocational school on the field of occupational safety and health, it is of critical importance that our curriculum provides enough learning opportunity on a real-world scenario to help our students to pursue the professional career.
The curriculum is revised on a regular basis to accommodate the emerging occupational safety and health issues with the help of industry experts. Moreover, some practical courses are very informative and delivered by industry experts.
In the near future, our students can spend an entire fourth school year on an enterprise practice program which gives them the opportunity to gain 'hands-on' experience in a real-life working environment and to promote job-seeking and career-pursuing.

Course Description
The courses are designed to maintain a curriculum in the broad areas of anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of workplace safety and health hazards.
The module regarding occupational safety is devoted to recognition and control safety hazards in industries, for example, Act of Occupational Safety and Health, Risk Assessment, Industrial Safety and Hygiene Management Practicum, Ergonomics, Electrical Machinery Safety, Fire and Explosion Control, Industrial Safety, Construction Safety, Engineering materials and Engineering mechanics.
The module concerning occupational health is dedicated to recognition, evaluation and control of health hazards in industries including chemical factors, physical factors, biological factors, ergonomical factors and social-psychological factors.
A variety of health-related courses are provided. For example, Act of Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial safety, Industrial hygiene, Industrial Safety and Hygiene Management Practicum, Industrial Ventilation, Engineering Control of Workplace Hazards, Workplace Monitoring, Work Physiology, Industrial Toxicology, Ergonomics, Introduction to Occupational Diseases, Industrial Psychology, Environmental Health, Labor Inspection Practicum, First Aid, Noise and Vibration, Radiation Safety, Dust Measurement and Control, Seminar on Industrial Safety and Health, Risk Assessment, Biological Hazards and Evaluation, Healthcare Workers’ Safety and Health, Management and Strategy of Hazardous Materials, Accreditation of Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).

Bachelor Program of Fire Safety Science
The Bachelor Program of Fire Safety Science was established by Department of Occupational Safety and Health and Department of Safety Health and Environmental Engineering under the College of Human Science in 2017. The aims of the program are to cultivate professionals specializing in designing, construction supervision, installation and service of fire safety equipment. Additionally, the program combines the occupational safety and health specialty, and let the students increase personal professional advantage.
